Ottawa, Canada.- The lawyer and diplomat Michelle Cohen de Friedlander presented her letters of credence to the Government of Canada, becoming the first woman to represent the Dominican Republic as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to that North American country.
The event occurred recently in a virtual ceremony, following COVID-19 protocols, headed by the Right Honourable Richard Wagner, Chief Justice and Administrator of the Government of Canada, and with the presence of Stewart Wheeler and Ian McCowan, the Chief of Protocol and the Secretary to the Governor General of Canada, respectively.
On behalf of the Dominican Government, Cohen told Wagner that during the last 67 years of formal diplomatic relations, Canada has been a very special and important friend of the Dominican people.
“It is of the utmost interest, to promptly vaccinate, so our countries can overcome the challenges of this pandemic, and we can continue in the business of trade and favourable investment”, said the Ambassador.
Cohen assured that it is a priority for the Dominican Government to get millions of Canadians back "to the safe and warm spirit of the Dominican Republic”. The Chief of the highest court in Canada welcomed the Dominican diplomat and told her that she arrives at a key moment for bilateral relations between the two countries.
With more than 26 years of professional experience, Cohen has accumulated extensive experience in international relations, law and politics. She was appointed Ambassador to Canada by decree 708-20 of President Luis Abinader.
She has focused her career on multilateralism and international cooperation through different institutions including the United Nations (UN), Organization of American States (OAS) and the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).
